TIMESLOT: STATUS REPORT

Hey people

TIMESLOT: STATUS REPORT
Well, it’s been a couple of months now, and my conclusion regarding the timeslot is…. is.. well.. that I don’t know wtf is going on. Yes, really. Some weeks Saturday’s been getting more players, other weeks Sunday gets more. At this point, I’m going to continue showing up BOTH on Saturdays *and* Sundays, until some kind of pattern emerges. I mean at the end of the day, if people want two shorter Sessions a week, than one big one, then that’s how it shall be. Maybe one day can be a ‘Classic’ Weekly AGR Session, and the other can be a more laid back, informal affair, where we can try new maps, experiment with new settings, and test new gameplay ideas. The other issue is the starting time:

23:59 GMT?
Fact: there hasn’t been 6 people there, ready to go at 23:00 GMT for months; and the POINT of the Sessions is GUARANTEED ACTION; based on player BEHAVIOUR (not ‘opinions’) the new time should  be 23:59 GMT (with people arriving earlier if they like ), BUT … is it possible that people are arriving late, and will continue to arrive late, no matter *what* the time is? If the new time becomes 23:59, will people simply start showing up 20 minutes later anyway? I’m a chronic latecomer (except for the Weekly AGR Sessions!!!!) myself, so I understand the psychology. Should the Sessions return to 22:00 GMT, and we just accept the fact that people are going to drift in during the first hour? The first game has always been considered the small, ‘warm up’ game, and the second the MAIN EVENT. Please leave your comments below regarding the timeslot situation. And bear in mind, by showing up on time, and playing for (at least) 1 hour a week, the ‘HOUR OF POWER’, you will ensure the survival, and possibly the flourishing of your weekly TF fix.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS
Well, hopefully everyone has sorted out their daylight savings situation, remember, the Sessions run to GMT time, because GMT does NOT have daylight savings, use the link below to check your timezone.

Meanwhile, I look forward to seeing you all at this weeks :

23:00 GMT used to be a good time, especially for the players in later time zones such as Europeans.

You’re right though about whatever slot you go with people will wait to see if the server fills up with players. I’d rather it be 23:00 GMT/UTC because like the old saying goes ‘If you build it, they will come’

    • OneManClan

Fair enough. Today there were enough people there at 23:00 GMT for a game, so let’s leave it at 23:00 for now. Btw Wolf, did you say you had changed your position, and now prefer Sundays over Saturdays?

      • Wolfgang

I preferred the overall vibe of Sundays but that’s probably a rose tinted spectacles type thing given historically AGR has always been on Sunday.

It would be interesting to see how many people would turn up to a session though where they are NOT required to be using FTE or a hacked Ezquake. Seeing players drop each week because they aren’t using FTE is extremely disappointing.
The server is being starved of players (yes I can appreciate they should come here and read instructions….but they don’t) so like you’ve said before, lets have an experiment. One day is for FTE modding nonsense and the other is like classic AGR….no client restrictions to connect….maximum player count!

        • OneManClan

          1. Noone is ‘required’ to use FTE2, people who (for some reason) want to use older clients just need to download one file, as described here.

          2. Contrary to the ‘advice’ given by one player(troll?), there is no need to rename files, or do anything to ‘hack’ EZQuake.

          3. Re ‘starving’ the server of players .. most of the “players” who drop each week are bots: caca7232, blubs, etc. If I thought removing the agrv4.pk3 requirement would bring back players, I’d do it asap, but I believe it would make minimal difference, and that the issue is Quakeworld in general. The good news is that AGR *is* getting some new players and they (thankfully) *are* following instructions, using the “Official AGR Client”, and thus connecting fine. (Need to get the documentation up to scratch so they understand wtf is going on!)

Note: I’m gonna use the term FTE2 (or ‘the AGR Client’)from now on, to make sure that NO-ONE confuses it with the original FTE!

The whole point of restricting things to FTE was to make sure the process is able to be more strictly controlled and support is easier for people who have issues.

That being said, I suppose you can always give Wolf’s idea a shot just to see how things roll.

Long-term sticking with one piece of software is going to be better, though. I’m not sure if one of the options available is more popular than FTE. I was using FuhQuake myself before the whole switch to FTE.

Beltan: Where have you been man? Whats your status re Sat/Sun ?

      • Beltan

By now I’ve posted on the newest video you put out but…I don’t really have a status right now as far as CusTF is concerned. I was dead serious about not coming back…I’m still thinking about returning, but I keep reminding myself there was a reason I quit.

Sorry, I know it sucks, but I still am not planning on coming back yet.

  • KING-OF-PING

Well I’ve been using Fuh with no issues. I’m not sure about changing again because other than occasional lockups, I have no other issues. I wouldn’t mind trying the FTE, just to see how it runs. Where can I get this btw? As far as Saturdays, I can see the attendance going down more now that we are having long days along with the daylight savings time. I can’t speak for the west coast, but for the eastern side, I think more people will be out doing other things on Saturdays and even on Sundays, but more on Saturdays. So making it later helps in that area. I hope you are open to some ideas, because it would be nice to have some normal old school TF games and maybe non custom AGR. Anyone up for short keepaway maps? What about random team changing where you are the attackers for a few minutes and at random times, the teams swap and then you are all of a sudden defending. hahaha I’ll do anything to liven the game up.

    • OneManClan

Hmmm, well.. it looks like Sunday is looking like the Official ‘AGR Session’ day, then. I’ll never trust a poll again 😉

I’d like a keepaway style game too, we had an interesting game of ‘office’ this week .. not a proper game (no flag), but its an interesting environment, and it might be compatible with some kind of keepwaway mod. Maybe something like “get as many of your team on the top floor, for as long as possible” or something..

I’m happy to try Random Team changing, and a whole bunch of other stuff .. there’s been heaps of ideas and suggestions which I;ve shelved.. nervous about pissing off and confusing Weekly AGR Session players who are there to PLAY.. but this stuff might be perfect for a (potential) Saturday “Experimental” Session..
