Hey people!!
I’ve always been skeptical of claims that ‘we’re losing players every week’ because those using older clients cannot connect without downloading the special pk3. As discussed in ‘Surviving in the Quakeworld’, I believe the well of ‘potential new players drifting around the quakeworld’ has run dry, and apart from the bots or trolls, any legit player who did return would be more than happy to go to the AGR website, and download the official client.. or download the pk3/pak file. Nevertheless I am curious as to whether it would make a difference so, I’ve gone back into the code and attempted to ‘disable’ the AGRv4 stuff. It hasn’t been easy because Doomface was only one aspect of the changes and the way skins were used/controlled/regulated. I tried to do it it last week week, but almost immediately players started getting kicked for ‘changing skin’, so I reverted to the regular version. I’ve had another go at it, and I believe this ‘Retro Skin’ version *should* be safe to use.
It feels silly, and wrong, and to be frank, slightly irritating.. because a LOT of work was making sure that older clients would still be able to work, and why go to all this effort just for the sake of a few stupid/lazy/illiterate people who can’t follow instructions? (Grrr) Nevertheless I do respect players like Wolfgang who believe that it would make a difference, so for a trial period (2 weeks?), lets have some Sessions where anyone using an ancient client can connect, without the need to go to the website and get the file.
So there it is.. for a couple of Sessions, the AGR world will be inhabited by expressionless robots, with no vomit stains, and no blood. I personally don’t think it will make a difference, but hey .. and my obsession for BIG games means that my personal preferences must give every now and then for the greater good. So *fingers crossed*, I’ll be proven WRONG, and we will soon have more converts to our little world 🙂

There may only be 6 new people who try to play AGR every year, so 2 weeks mightn’t be enough to run a really fair test. But, good luck.

UPDATE: We had more skin bugs today, AND there was an (unprecedented!) hardware issue w the server (not my fault!) which meant I couldn’t revert to a previous version! Grrrr. Anyway, normal services have resumed, and all is looking good for tomorrows Session. I’m also workin’ on a way to make it so that those using the AGR Client (FTE2) WILL see the Doomface skins, so they don’t miss out during this non-Doomface trial period – which if I don’t get the old CustomTF skin code working, will be a short trial indeed!

Ok, this is looking much more complicated (and bug prone!) than I imagined .. I’ll have another go during the week, but at this stage, it looks like the ‘Retro Skin Trial’ will be postponed ‘until further notice’..
Why not make those faces Green for kicks…kinda like “The Mask” hahaha. But here’s another one if you are stuck on keeping the faces. Make the face turn green when you are sick. Make the faces red when you shoot, like you are angry. I like the old stuff better and I think gameplay is more important than some of the face stuff, especially if there’s any hints of an issue.
Green faces when sick.. nice. I’ll look at potential new skins when a new player model is made, but that wont be for a while. Meanwhile, afaik, there are no issues with the skins, players can connect without the need to download AGRv4.pk3, but *might* see the wrong expressions until they do.
Newbies: If you see a player with vomit on his clothes, that means he’s diseased and contagious – stay away! 🙂
